Spoiler Alert! One of the most famous and compelling characters in the history of Star Wars is Boba Fett, and not only that but all of pop culture. His signature Mandalorian armor has resounded with Star Wars fans all over the world, and ever since his debut canonical appearance in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, has spurred interest in Mandalorian culture and lore. With the bits and pieces of light shed on these in The Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows, we finally have the hit TV show The Mandalorian. And Boba Fett, although rumored to be deceased, as he was thrown into the Sarlacc it during the events of Star Wars: The Return Of The Jedi, is set to return to the screen.
The Mandalorian: S2 kicked off to a flying start, with Din Djarin arriving in a town called Mos Pelgo on Tatooine. Here, he discovers that the marshal, Cobb Vanth, is wearing a battered suit of Mandalorian armor. It’s revealed that the armor was bought from some Jawas who scavenged it. Din demands Cobb to hand over the armor, and he agrees to do so if Din helps him slay a Greater Krayt Dragon that is ravaging the town’s livestock. Fans will recognize the armor’s colors and battered, scuffed appearance almost instantly as that of the armor of Boba Fett.
After defeating the dragon with the help of the local townsfolk and a tribe of Tuskens, Din Djarin reclaims the Mandalorian armor from Cobb, who willingly relinquishes it, and a scarred, older Boba Fett is seen standing on a hill overlooking the victory. It is clearly Boba Fett, as the actor playing the role is Temuera Morrison, who originally played Jango Fett in Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones. Jango Fett was responsible for providing the Republic clone army’s genetic template in exchange for one clone he could raise as his own son: Boba Fett. There are other clues that the character is Boba Fett: the Krayt Dragon’s lair lies within the disused pit where the Sarlacc used to live, and the weapons he is seen carrying on his back are similar to Boba Fett’s original introduction in the 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special.
How did Boba Fett escape from the Sarlacc pit, I hear you ask? According to the now non-canon 1996 anthology Tales From Jabba’s Palace, specifically in the story “A Barve Like That: The Tale of Boba Fett,” by author J.D. Montgomery (Daniel Keys Moran), Boba Fett made contact telepathically with the Sarlacc and persuaded it to munch on his jetpack. The resulting explosion catapulted Boba out of the pit and to relative safety. Another, more colloquial and comical version of the story was that the Sarlacc couldn’t digest the Mandalorian armor and so burped him out from the pit. In any case, the reveal of Boba Fett at the end of the episode of The Mandalorian asks the question: Will he be in any further episodes, and if so, to what extent? And will Temuera Morrison be reprising the role of Boba Fett for any future appearances?
With Boba Fett being one of the most interesting and celebrated characters in the Star Wars universe, and with emphasis placed on non-Jedi characters, it’s likely that Boba Fett will feature in future episodes and maybe even his own series. Former Disney boss Bob Iger had this to state:
“The priority in the next few years is television with The Mandalorian season 2 coming in October, and then more coming from The Mandalorian thereafter, including the possibility of infusing it with more characters and the possibility of taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”
Since this quote, speculation has begun about which characters he was talking about, and if they will get their own spinoff series. If Boba Fett is one of those characters, I’m sure a new series about the hard-bitten bounty hunter will be received with open arms.
The Mandalorian is currently airing only on Disney+.
