Emmanuel Motelin is a Kenyan-Canadian man of many hats: a composer, a cybersecurity professional, and a research analyst. But really, most people know him for his music. Many of his pieces are predominantly cyberpunk/dystopian, space ambient/atmospheric, sci-fi, and instrumental. He’s gotten pretty well-known for remastering film soundtracks, too. Examples include “All the Best Memories Are Hers” for the movie Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Another example is “Stay” for the movie Interstellar (2014). His full name is actually Emmanuel Kimutai Motelin. In Kalenjin culture, they give you a name based on when you’re born. Kimutai basically refers to a Kalenjin born in the morning hours, i.e., between dawn and 11 am, those born the day after labor started are also usually assigned this at birth. He was born in Kericho, Kenya – you might know it as Kenya’s Tea Capital Hub. He is proud of being a dual national. However, he does not dilute his Kenyan nationality with his Canadian citizenship. Growing up in Alberta, he was influenced by both his East African and Western cultures, by the way.

Motelin’s upbringing is defined by a blend of East African and Western influences.
Intersection of Heritage and Music Genre:
He is a prominent creator from the Kalenjin community based in Canada. He diverges from the regional norm of localized dialect music. Historical background about Motelin:
The surname Motelin is a modern variation of traditional Kalenjin linguistic roots. It means “people of the language” and is known in the vernacular as Biikap Kuutiit. It is found mainly among the Kipsigis and Nandi sub-tribes in Kenya’s Rift Valley. This includes the Kalenjin community in the Nairobi region. It is also present in the Kalenjin diaspora in North America and Europe. Similar to other Kalenjin terms like moita (calf), the “Mo-” prefix often symbolizes wealth and agricultural sustenance. It stems from the root word Möet, which can mean “stomach” (signifying lineage) or “wound” (referring to circumstances of birth or initiation)
