Hockey continues to grow around the world, and it’s exciting to see countries like Kenya making strides to join the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). On September 26th, 2024, during a meeting in Greece, the IIHF passed a motion to make Kenya an associate member of the federation. This is a significant milestone for Kenya and East Africa with the sport’s expanding global reach considering its rarity in the region.

As an associate member, Kenya will need a home Olympic-sized ice rink to compete in the proper IIHF World Championships. In the meantime, they can participate in smaller, limited events, which will help them gain valuable experience and exposure.
As a Kenyan-Canadian, this news is particularly meaningful to me. Growing up in Canada, I’ve always been a fan of the Flames and recently the Canucks. Seeing Kenya join the ice hockey federation is a moment worth celebrating. It’s a big step forward, but there’s still a long journey ahead for our Kenyan brothers back home. Many of us in the diaspora are eager to see hockey grow in popularity in Kenya and are ready to support this exciting development.
Nairobi, Kenya

The road ahead may be challenging, but with determination and support, Kenya’s ice hockey community can achieve great things. Let’s celebrate this milestone and look forward to a bright future for hockey in Kenya! 🏒🇰🇪
