Is this the future of taxis? Zoox, the self-driving startup now owned by Amazon, unveiled a fully autonomous EV with no steering wheel that carries up to four passengers. The robotaxi can drive for sixteen hours on a single charge and maxes out at 75 miles per hour. The ride-sharing vehicle seats up to four people and can be mailed from the street.
Who Makes the Self-Driving Rideshare Vehicle?
The car is designed and manufactured by Zoox, the business has been in the market of designing self-driving vehicles for many years now and this is the first time they have released their rideshare vehicle for a test-drive. The company was founded in 2001 and has headquarters both in San Francisco, CA and Guatemala City, Guatemala.
How Does the Self-Driving Vehicle Work?
The vehicle has four seats for each of the passengers. There is no steering wheel and it is battery-operated. The car can reach speeds of up to 75 mph. It has a sensor on each corner with a spinning laser, as well as cameras around the perimeter of the car. It runs on battery packs for a maximum of 16 hours.
Is the Zoox Cab Safe?
The vehicle has passed all of the FMVSS crash tests required by United States regulations. In case of emergency, the Zoox company staff are able to remotely take over the vehicle’s operations. The laser sensors and cameras on the outside of the vehicle help to ensure safety in navigation.
Are Other Companies Working on Similar Technology?
Google maintains a self-driving rideshare service called Waymo. Additionally, a company called Cruise, LLC has been testing out self-driving vehicles in San Francisco, CA.
What Are Zoox’s Plans for the Cab industry?
The company already had a factory production set-up based in Fremont, CA. There they have the ability to manufacture between 10,000 to 15,000 card per year.
